What is the iGeneration?

Even if you are not especially interested in genealogy, you have probably heard about Generation Z, also known as the iGeneration. Many people disagree on where to draw the line between Millennials and Gen Z. Some believe that anyone born during or after 1995 should count as Millennials or the iGeneration, while others say it should be from 1997 to the early 2000s. While we are an Orange County managed IT services company and not sociologists, we are very interested to see how computer technology has impacted youngsters. Hence, we were inspired to do a little research on the topic! We will be using the terms “iGeneration” and “Gen Z” interchangeably throughout this blog post.

Significant media consumption

People within this generation sure love their media. Whether it be scrolling through social media, watching television, or playing video games, they are all about that media. But to be completely fair, your grandmother was probably excited when she had her first television installed in the family room. How many times do you think she was lectured about talking on the telephone too much, as well? Many members of Gen Z are also criticized by older generations for having poor impulse control, being drawn to routine instant gratification.

They still like hanging out with their friends in person

It is a common stereotype that Gen Z prefers to chat with their friends online than interact in person. Many believe that they will only want to meet up with people if they absolutely have to, such as if they need their local Orange County managed IT service provider to fix their Internet connection. Despite their heavy reliance on technology, statistics prove otherwise.

Concerned about issues pertaining to social class and race

Many people within this generation are concerned about social equality, believing that all people should have the same opportunities regardless of race, religion, or personal identity. They are vocal about standing up against racial injustice.

Mental health issues are a concern

Many studies have shown that people within the iGeneration show higher rates of depressive disorders, often correlating with heavy social media usage. We believe that it is important to recognize that technology itself is not the enemy. Rather, it is something that should be used responsibly, just like driving a car or drinking alcohol (just not at the same time, of course!).

Living with parents longer, delaying major life milestones such as marriage and children

It is more common nowadays for people in their 20s to still be living with their parents in the United States. While in other parts of the world, it is common practice to not move into your own place until marriage, this was frowned upon among Americans in previous decades. Now with housing prices increasing, many people are finding it more difficult to leave their parents’ house even well into adulthood.
